Hamas leader visits Gaza flotilla ship in Turkey

Gaza

Hamas premier Ismail Haniyeh visited a docked Mavi Marmara on Monday in Turkey in a show of solidarity with the Islamic aid group IHH, which had planned to send the vessel with another Gaza flotilla last year but then dropped the plan.

On the Istanbul dock, Haniyeh denounced the Israeli blockade of Gaza. Israel has lifted restrictions on consumer goods, though it kept a ban on materials like cement and metals that it says could be used by terrorists.

The Mavi Marmara was the target of a deadly raid by Israeli troops seeking to prevent an aid flotilla reaching the Gaza Strip on May 31, 2010.

Protest in Hebrew University for Gaza

Gaza

IMG_3206_copieStudents from Hebrew university and activists chain themselves and wear T-shirts with names of some Palestinians who were killed during the Israeli military large-scale operation "Cast Lead" as part of an action in front of the Hebrew university to mark the three year anniversary of the launch of the attack and to call for the end of the blockade, East Jerusalem, Tuesday, December 27, 2011.

Students wearing those T-shirts were not allowed inside the university. They declared that right wing students who openly use racist slogans have no problem at all conducting their activities inside the university.

Also a reminder: the Hebrew university is built in East Jerusalem, i.e. occupied territory according to international law. The university is expanding and is trying to evict Palestinian families who live nearby.

Israeli navy attacks international observers, injures Palestinian, on monitoring boat in Gaza waters

Gaza

Israeli_navy_attacks_international_observers_injures_PalestinianAt 10:55 am, an Israeli naval warship attacked the international observers and Palestinian captain of the Civil Peace Service Gaza (CPSGAZA) boat Oliva, injuring its captain in an apparent attempt to capsize it.

The two international observers, both Italian citizens, are available for media questions or interviews.
"The Israeli navy passed near us and the fishermen, and started to go around us, creating waves," said Rosa Schiano, one of the international observers. "The fishermen escaped, but we couldn't because of a problem with our engine. We couldn't move, and they went around us very quickly. The Israelis saw that we couldn't move, and that the captain was trying to fix the engine, but they didn't stop. We told them, 'Please stop! Please stop!' But they didn't."

When the warship was two meters away from the Oliva, one of the waves it had created nearly capsized the small boat, filling it with water and causing the Palestinian captain to fall out, injuring his left leg.

"Their intentions were to do something very bad," said international observer Daniela Riva. "Coming so close to us was very dangerous, and they obviously knew that."
